Sleep no more play4/27/2023 For most people, a short bout of sleep deprivation isn’t a cause for concern. While Sleep No More is in the tradition of environmental theatre, it also borrows the effective mechanisms of the haunted house – eerie music, deep darkness, mysterious characters and labyrinthine space. Sleep No More Performed by a single actor reading a story instead of a full cast, the selections are scary enough to ensure that you will Sleep No More. When you get less sleep than needed or no sleep at all, it’s called sleep deprivation. I had read plenty of Sleep No More reviews prior to my visit and still wasn’t quite sure what to expect. There is (almost) no spoken dialogue, no barriers between the actors and the audience, and only a loosely-defined beginning, middle, and end. You then try to follow the mysterious, suspicious, touching, and sensual characters one by one in a story of murder or tormented love that takes you from one floor to the next. Sleep No More is New York’s best known interactive theater a far cry from customary Broadway shows. ![]() ![]() You then enter a lift where the rules of conduct are dictated to you: you keep your mask on, you don’t talk and, above all, you explore the premises for three hours. At one point you might wind up in a dimly. Outside those restrictions, you can do whatever and go wherever you want. At the beginning of your adventure, you are given a white mask, an allusion to the film Eyes Wide Shut. Sleep No More has two rules: Keep your mask on and don't talk to anybody. The actors wander among the spectators, back and forth, in the corridors, the staircases, the rooms, the bathroom, the laboratory, the cemetery, the infirmary or the hotel garden. Indeed, this is not a classic play: there is no stage, no seating. There are multiple arrival times for each evening ranging from 6 p.m. Sleep No More is, in short, a voyeur’s delight, with all the creepy, shameful pleasures that entails. ![]() Welcome to the McKittrick Hotel, a 1930s mansion of nearly 9,000 square metres in Chelsea, whose corridors, stairs, rooms, bathrooms, laboratory, cemetery, infirmary, and garden provide the incredible setting of Sleep No More. Sleep No More is an indoor promenade performance lasting up to three hours inspired by Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
